A fire basket that glows through hundreds of small holes, with a grill on top when you get hungry.

People have been turning old washing machine drums into fire pits for years. The HEAT Fire Drum takes that idea and does it properly. It is a round steel basket covered in small holes, so the fire glows through the sides while sparks stay inside. Add the grill grid and it doubles as a barbecue.

Why Does a Drum-Style Fire Basket Work So Well?

The Fire Drum is a round, 54cm wide basket with a large open top. You drop logs in from above, and the steel walls hold the fire in a neat column.

It stands 60cm high on three legs, so the fire sits at a good height to enjoy from a garden chair.

HEAT Fire Drum - how do the small holes help with sparks

How Do the Small Holes Help with Sparks?

The sides are covered in small perforations instead of wide bars. You still see the flames moving inside, but sparks and embers have a harder time getting out.

That makes for a calmer fire. You spend more time watching it and less time brushing embers off your clothes.

Can You Cook on the Fire Drum?

Yes. A grill grid comes in the box and sits across the top. Once the flames die down to hot embers, it works like a round barbecue.

The grid is removable with the supplied tools, so you can switch back to a plain fire when you have finished cooking.

HEAT Fire Drum - where should you put a fire basket in your garden

Where Should You Put a Fire Basket in Your Garden?

Place it on a flat, level, non-flammable surface like paving or gravel. HEAT says not to use it on decking, dry grass, wood chips or leaves.

Keep it in the open, clear of fences, sheds and branches. Light it with paper or dry kindling on the log grate, never petrol or lighter fluid.

How Do You Look After a Powder-Coated Fire Basket?

The steel has a heat-resistant black powder coating. A little colour change after use is normal.

Empty the ash once it is fully cold and wipe it down without harsh cleaners. When it's not in use, keep it covered or somewhere dry to make it last longer.
